Explore with Araiya - The History of Palampur Tea Gardens
Ever heard of the term
tea-tourism? In Palampur, you will understand why the world is so obsessed with
tea-estates! No site seems better than the slopes of tea-plantations with
ice-capped mountains in the background. People have only recently discovered how
mesmerizing the tea-plantations of Kangra Valley are even though they exist
there since the early 1900s.
The tea-plantations have
amazing scenery with the majestic Dhauladhar in the background. The best part
of staying in the region is the mornings, the dewy tea-leaves spread a
different aroma altogether which freshens up the mood. When you book with
Araiya, you get to see the most interesting views of the Kangra Valley from the
hotel itself as the town of Palampur lies at the confluence of the plains and
hills. One of the most notable tea estates of the region is the Dharmsala Tea
Co which has been operational since 1882 and has been providing some of the
finest varieties of tea since then. The Dharmsala Tea Co is owned by the Mann
family which is a prominent business family from the Kangra Valley.
The uniqueness of the
tea-variety grown here earned the region a GI (Geographical Indication) tag in
2005 by the Office of the Controller-General of Patents, Designs, and
Trademarks, Chennai.
Most tea-estates
in the region offer guided tours to their factories, estate, and plantations.
The tours are very insightful as you get to know the process of growing tea and
how different flavors are processed. The best time to visit the tea-estates is
from April to June because the days are sunny and the evenings are chilly. Just
make sure to use a high SPF sunblock to avoid any irritation caused by the
sun.
Both black and green
teas are cultivated in the Kangra region since the starting. However, due to
the devastating earthquake of 1905, most of the factories in the area were shut
down and the British were forced to sell the estates and leave the area.
Today, one of the most
visited tea estates of the area is the Towa Tea Estate located at an altitude
of 6500 feet. One key differentiator between the tea of Palampur and elsewhere
in the world is the flavor. The varieties grown here are mostly the Chinese
variety and almost all tea-estates are at an altitude of a minimum of 4000
feet.
No planning needed to
explore the tea plantations of Kangra Valley, simply book with Araiya.
